EN: This course is devoted to understanding scientific discovery and promoting it. In the course of the semester, we will focus on reading and watching scientific and popular-scientific media, learn about cooperation with researchers, study participants and the general public and design a variety of dissemination materials, such as leaflets and infographics.

PL: Kurs poświęcony jest zrozumieniu metody naukowej oraz rozpowszechnianiu wyników badań. Podczas trwania kursu, studenci i studentki poznają szeroki zakres materiałów naukowych i popularnonaukowych, dowiedzą się podstaw współpracy z badaczami, uczestnikami nadań i społeczeństwem oraz zaprojektują materiały służące rozpowszechnianiu wyników badań, takie jak ulotka czy infografika.

Aims of the course (both parts combined):

1. Extending the knowledge of the written and spoken academic register – vocabulary and phraseology  – in general terms and within the selected academic discipline.
2. Extending the skills in effective use of sources in terms of critical reading as well as citing and synthesis applied in a scientific text or presentation.
3. Furthering of academic presentation skills, academic argumentation skills and academic discussion in both writing and speaking.
4. Learning the critical requirements of the scientific text in terms of its general construction  and rhetorical structure of its component parts.
5. Development of skills needed in editing and troubleshooting of academic texts.

The aim of this course is to develop your skills related to acquiring real-life linguistic data. We will explore methodologies allowing the collection of data in various formats that enable quantitative analysis. We will have a look both at more “traditional” fieldwork approaches, and more modern ones, involving electronic media. The course will include a considerable amount of project work consisting in actual data collection.

Upon successfully completing this course, you will at least:

  1. Be able to design data collection procedures for quantitative analysis.
  2. Be able to apply some basic methodologies and techniques in actual data collection.
  3. Have an understanding of the strengths and pitfalls of linguistic fieldwork.
