15-AOEP-PH-EL-1BA-12

ECTS: 2

The course is taught in the first two years of the BA programme. There is a division into “British” and “American” groups, which is reflected in the pronunciation model used in class. The aim is for the students in this group to develop consistent, fully intelligible pronunciation based on native phonemic and allophonic model in contemporary 'British' English. Pronunciation training in 1BA deals with segmental features: English vowels, English consonants, weak forms of grammar words, elementary sugrasegmental features: word stress, sentence stress and rhythm, developing the awareness of variability. Systematic work will allow you to control your own pronunciation and in future become better teachers of English by spotting phonetic mistakes and finding ways of correcting them. The teaching and learning processes will be based on:

  1. exposure (e.g. transcription tasks, pronunciation-based listening)

  2. listening and production (e.g. in-class drills, home assignments involving practical exercises solo and in pairs, recording your own speech, listening to recordings and imitating them)

  3. transfer to new contexts (e.g. prepared and improvised dialogues, speeches, reading aloud, etc.).
