- making students familiar with the basic notions in phonetics and phonology of English
- making students aware of the differences between phonetics and phonology - introducing specialistic terminology and theoretical knowledge in the fields of study
- introducing theoretical tools necessary for future description and study of English phonetics and phonology
- introducing the theoretical background necessary for mastering practical English phonetics
- making students familiar with dialects and varieties of English
- contrasting selected processes in English with those in the Polish language
