Conference interpreting goes PINC! Unveiling the secrets of simultaneous interpreting with the Polish INterpreting Corpus

What if you had access to hundreds of speeches and their interpretations? What if you knew how and how quickly thousands of words were interpreted? What if you could use this data to learn what happens in the simultaneous interpreting booth?

This seminar is a combination of two fascinating things. One is simultaneous interpreting – a feat verging on impossible because how can you listen to one language and say the same thing in another language at the same time? The other is an interpreting corpus – a collection of speeches and their interpretations that offers you a large volume of authentic data. The combination of the two can help us gain insight into some equally fascinating patterns and regularities in the process of simultaneous interpreting. Participants of this seminar will learn about corpus-based interpreting studies, work with corpus analysis tools (such as Sketch Engine) and use data from the currently developed Polish INterpreting Corpus (PINC) to unveil the secrets of simultaneous interpreting.
