Qualitative perspective in research on health and illness

This series of lectures focuses on qualitative research in medical humanities. Its main point is to introduce students to the main tenets of conducting qualitative research.

The lectures start with a discussion of the dominant quantitative paradigm in the field of study and its main assumptions. I shall then introduce two aspects of qualitative research. First, I shall discuss methods of collecting data such as research interviews, ethnography, focus groups. Second, I shall discuss methods of analysing textual data, focusing in particular on text-based discourse analysis anchored within Critical Discourse Studies.

The theoretical discussion will be exemplified by references to discourse analytic research on experience of mental health and suicidality.
