Introduction to visual analysis

This course offers an introduction to social semiotic analysis of images. Drawing upon analytic foundation created by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen, the course will discuss the details of the method and show its relation to Hallidayan systemic-linguistic view of language.

After the initial introductory part, the course will offer space for exploring images. Although the main focus of our analyses will be photography, other modes of imagery will be welcome. Students will be expected to focus on an image (or a series of images) and offer a detailed, context-bound analysis of the image.
