This course examines preparations for linguistic research. It is an introduction to data-driven discourse analytic research.

Its initial part will introduce students to the research process and its structure. We shall discuss concepts of research, the design of research questions as well as their functions. We shall also explore research methodology as the backbone of the research process and its uses. Then we shall focus on the complexity of linguistic fieldwork and primary data. The methods we shall explore will range from ethnography, varieties of interviewing types and techniques, to netnography and rapidly expanding mainstream and social media sources.

In the latter part of the course, students will be expected to plan a piece of research involving collecting primary data and offer a thorough reflection on their assumptions.
