The aim of the course is to improve your phonetic skills in British English and master suprasegmental features which pose particular problems to Polish learners of English. You will be exposed to a variety of practical exercises on connected and style-dependent speech. Topics which will be discussed and practiced will involve aspects of stress, rhythm and intonation. This course will help you increase your awareness of phonostylistic processes (e.g. linking, reduction, and assimilation) and the meaning of specific tones, facilitating their spontaneous use. Systematic work will allow you to control your own pronunciation and in future become better teachers of English by spotting mistakes at the suprasegmental level. The teaching and learning processes will be based on:
exposure (e.g. transcription tasks, pronunciation-based listening)
listening and production (e.g. in-class drills,home assignments involving practical exercises solo and in pairs,recording your own speech, listening to recordings and imitating them)
transfer to new contexts (e.g. prepared and improvised dialogues, speeches, reading aloud, etc.).
