Dutch and South African working-class literature in a transnational context

(Nederlandse en Zuid-Afrikaanse arbeidersliteratuur in een transnationale context)

This course focuses on how a social and economic context determines a text's form and reading. We are going to discuss various forms of working-class literature: European genres (short story, drama, poetry) but also African oral forms, music and song. The stress will be placed on how socialist thought travelled between South Africa and Europe.
