The aim of the course is to introduce students to the idea of multiculturalism in the context of Australia and New Zealand. We will look at their formation as settler colonial states, and focus both on their Indigenous populations (Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia and Māori in New Zealand) as well as their immigrant communities. With regard to Indigenous peoples, we will discuss the history of government policies toward them, Indigenous land rights, policies of assimilation (with a particular emphasis on the impact of education), as well as Indigenous sovereignty and cultural resistance and revival. When it comes to immigrant communities, we will discuss immigration history and immigration policies in both countries, and we will look at selected immigrant groups from Europe, Asia and the Pacific and discuss their histories, cultures and impact on the two countries.
