The course is a comprehensive introduction to American painting and American architecture. It covers the key schools and trends in American painting and architecture from the colonial period to the 21st century.  It helps students to read and talks about painting and buildings. It provides essential historical background to perceive the relations between the artwork and the social and political context in which it was created. It shows how American art and American identity was shaped as a result of different encounters between ethnic, racial and regional and gender groups as well as political and artistic ambitions of individual artists and influential groups.
