The aim of this proseminar is to discuss the relationship between language, culture and society in Wales in the 20th and 21st c. The socio-political processes that led to Welsh becoming a minority language will be discussed to provide external background for the contemporary sociolinguistic situation in Wales and how it influences the social and cultural life in the country. We will discuss the role of the Eisteddfod in cultivating the Welsh language and Welsh-language culture, the development and main works of Welsh literature in English, Welsh music (in particular from the Cool Cymru period, and the misrepresentation of Wales in films and how it transformed during the 1990s.
The assessment will be based on attendance, preparation (reading assignments, quizzes), contribution to the in-class discussion, two written assignments and final test. The participants are required to read all assigned articles, which will be available on Moodle or in the Novum library.
