15-PROSEM206-3BA-11

This proseminar is devoted to the dictionary treatment of lexical items which are notoriously difficult to describe: technical and scientific terms, neologisms, slang words, and above all, so-called sensitive terms (taboo words, words connected with ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, etc). We will look at how they are defined in monolingual dictionaries, what equivalents they are given in bilingual dictionaries, what labels, if any, are used to signal their status, and how their use is illustrated by example sentences. Various ethical issues will be touched upon which stem from the lexicographer’s task of presenting such items objectively yet without offending the sensibilities of dictionary users who come from different cultural backgrounds and may thus have different expectations regarding dictionary content.
