This course will examine American expatriate writing in Europe from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. It will focus on such canonical American writers as Henry James, Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Katherine Anne Porter, William Faulkner, and William Styron. It will try to convey an understanding of American literature as a global literature rather than as a purely national phenomenon and will introduce participants to recent innovations in critical theory such as the writing of the transnational and the technique of distant reading. Assessment of participants will reflect the depth and quality of their discussion of literary works in class and the degree of their preparation for each seminar meeting. Each student will be required to make a number of class presentations. Assessment in the second year of studies will reflect the way that participants plan, research, and draft their MA dissertation.
