15-SEMLIC-12/22

This seminar focuses on a range of meanings (= senses) that words have, and the relationships that exist between word senses. Students will learn about various semantic relations that word senses enter such as synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy and polysemy, and about the way they are represented in dictionaries, in particular monolingual dictionaries for learners of English as a foreign language. The seminar will also cover the lexicographic representation of multiword lexical units, such as collocations and idioms. Both paper and digital dictionaries will be discussed; monolingual, bilingual and semi-bilingual ones. Students will also become familiar with the notion of a corpus, and will practise using various corpora. The final grade will be based on the progress of a BA project, progress reports, moderating in-class discussions and participation in classes.
