15-SEMLIC-12

This BA course is aimed at students who are interested in how language is used (and abused) in politics, the media and in our own private conversations, both online and offline.

The course starts with an introduction of key terms and theories that we will use through the year. We then move to discussing theories of racism and other forms of exclusion, and how such discrimination is constructed through language. After, we start to use analytical ‘toolboxes’ that can be used when reading texts. In the second semester , we look at how social actors are discursively constructed by political actors, traditional media and on social media. Throughout the course we focus on current issues in the US, Europe and the World including: National identity, racism, migration, populist politics, and LGBTQ rights.

In order to complete the course, students will be required to: (a) attend all classes; (b) participate in class activities and be prepared for classes; (c) give one presentation; and (d) choose a research topic, conduct original research and complete their BA projects.
