15-FIF-OG-12/22

This is the Lecture component of the English Phonetics and Phonology 1BA course.

The course offers an overview of the sounds of English. This is essential for a student of English Studies for several reasons: (1) It is the foundation of any study of the structure of English, e.g. in later courses, such as a BA or MA seminar or a professional career in linguistics. (2) It allows conscious control of your own English pronunciation, and in particular independent work on it. (3) It enables you to describe and possibly correct the pronunciation of your own future students if you choose a teaching career. Note that we assume that you start with a good proficiency in English, and your aim is to work with English professionally (as an interpreter, linguist etc.), rather than simply use English to communicate in everyday life.
