Exploring solutions for disruptive behaviour, discipline and special needs students in the classroom

Problematic and disruptive behaviour and problems with discipline are among the biggest fears of starting teachers. This proseminar provides future teachers with practical methods how to make a good and strong start as a teacher in a primary or secondary school and how to successfully intervene in disruptive behaviour. Besides intervention, we’ll also focus on prevention: how to take away the cause of behavioural problems, how to provide structure and order and how to create a class atmosphere that will lead to better behaviour and a higher degree of motivation.

In the second part of the proseminar, we’ll focus on how to tackle bullying, how to communicate with (sometimes extremely demanding) parents, how to teach our pupils good learning skills and responsibility. You’ll also learn how to help and to deal with pupils with special needs, such as ADHD, dyslexia, autism or depression and how to motivate the gifted pupils who can get bored easily.

The proseminar will be taught in a practical and interactive way, almost like a workshop. Course grade will be based on a written test (40%) and an oral presentation of a solution to a case study (60%).
